El Corte Inglés S.A. is a Spanish department store group founded in Madrid in 1940 by Ramón Areces and César Rodríguez. Its name is Spanish for the English cut, a reference to an English style of dressmaking. It is the largest department store group in Europe and the third largest in the world, and the last chain of its kind left in Spain and Portugal. The company has been a member of the International Association of Department Stores since 1998.
