GNC, formally GNC Holdings, LLC and originally General Nutrition Centers, is an American retailer and manufacturer of health and nutrition products, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Its shops sell vitamins, supplements, minerals, herbs, sports nutrition, diet and energy products, a large part of them under its own labels. The business started in Pittsburgh in 1935 as a health food shop opened by David Shakarian. It is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chinese state owned Harbin Pharmaceutical Group.
