Athletic Club, called Athletic Bilbao outside Spain, is a Basque football club founded in Bilbao on 18 July 1898. It plays in La Liga and is one of only three clubs never relegated from the Spanish top flight, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona. It has won eight league titles and twenty-four Copa del Rey trophies. Home matches are at San Mamés, a stadium of 53,289 places on the bank of the Nervión. Athletic is unique among Europe's larger clubs for its cantera policy of signing only players born in or trained in the Basque Country. It is owned by its members and is nicknamed Los Leones, the Lions.
