Nordstrom, Inc. is an American upmarket department store chain based in Seattle, Washington. It was founded there in 1901 by John W. Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin as a shoe shop, added clothing in 1963 and had grown into a full line retailer by 1971. In 1973 the company started Nordstrom Rack, its off price division, and both divisions spread across the United States in the years that followed. The full line stores compete with Bloomingdale's, Dillard's, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, while Nordstrom Rack competes with TJX and Ross Stores.
