Subway is an American fast food franchise that sells submarine sandwiches and wraps. It was founded in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by Fred DeLuca with financing from Peter Buck, under the name Pete's Super Submarine Sandwiches, took the Subway name in 1972 and began franchising in 1974. It is the largest single brand restaurant chain in the world, with more than 37,000 locations in over 100 countries as of 2023, about 61 percent of them in the United States. Its international headquarters are in Shelton, Connecticut.
