Starbucks is an American coffeehouse company founded on 30 March 1971 in Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, where it still has its headquarters at the Starbucks Center. It began as a seller of roasted beans and later built its business on brewed coffee and espresso drinks, which it now serves alongside teas, cold drinks, pastries and sandwiches. It is the largest coffeehouse chain in the world, with stores in dozens of countries. The name comes from Starbuck, the first mate in the novel Moby-Dick.
