Toys R Us is an American toy, clothing and baby product retailer founded in April 1948 by Charles Lazarus in Washington. It began as Children's Supermart, a furniture shop, and took its present name in 1957, growing into one of the largest toy sellers in the United States and expanding abroad from the mid 1980s. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in September 2017 and closed its remaining American stores in June 2018. The name lives on through licensees, concessions inside department stores and shops in other countries.
