The YMCA of the USA, formally the National Council of Young Men's Christian Associations of the United States of America and usually known as the Y, is the national body for the American branches of the worldwide YMCA movement. That movement began in London in 1844 and reached Boston in 1851. The national council brings together local associations across the country, which run sports halls, swimming pools, childcare, summer camps and community programmes. Its stated aims are youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
