Matalan is a British clothing and homeware retailer, founded in 1985 by John Hargreaves in Preston, Lancashire, and now based in Knowsley on Merseyside. In 1988 it moved to out-of-town warehouse stores run as a membership-only cash and carry, a model borrowed from Sam's Club in the United States and dropped again by 1998. Turnover grew from 26 million pounds in 1992 to 800 million in 1998. As of June 2024 it had 230 stores in Britain plus franchised outlets in the Middle East.
