The National Trust, in full The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, is a British charity founded in 1895. Its purpose is to look after places of historic interest or natural beauty permanently for the benefit of the nation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Its holdings include country houses, gardens, coastline and open countryside, and members pay a yearly subscription that covers entry to its sites. It began as a company limited by guarantee and was later reincorporated as a statutory corporation.
