REMA 1000 is a Norwegian discount grocery chain owned entirely by the Reitan group. The name combines Rema, short for Reitan Mat or Reitan Food after founder Odd Reitan, with 1000, a reference to the original plan of stocking only a thousand different products. The chain works on a franchise model, buying large volumes of a limited range and passing them to semi independent shopkeepers trading under its brand. It is headquartered in Oslo and had 868 shops in Norway and Denmark by the end of 2016.
