Recreational Equipment, Inc., trading as REI, is an American retailer of outdoor gear and recreation services, based in Seattle, Washington. The business brands itself as a consumers' co-operative, and shoppers can buy a lifetime membership in it. Its stores sell equipment and clothing for camping, hiking, climbing, cycling, water sports, running, fitness, snow and travel, but unlike many rivals it does not stock hunting or fishing gear. REI runs 194 stores in 44 states and also takes orders online.
