Billa is an Austrian supermarket chain that also operates in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe. It was founded in 1953 by Karl Wlaschek, who sold his controlling interest in 1996 to the German REWE Group; it is held today through REWE International AG. The name is a contraction of Billiger Laden, German for cheap shop. Billa stores are neighbourhood supermarkets selling groceries and everyday household goods.
