Kohl's is an American department store chain with 1,174 stores, present in every state except Hawaii. The company goes back to a corner grocery opened in Milwaukee in 1927 by Maxwell Kohl, a Polish immigrant; the first Kohl's department store followed in 1962 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. British American Tobacco took a controlling interest in 1972 while the Kohl family still ran the business, and in 1979 the corporation passed to BATUS Inc. The stores sell clothing, footwear, jewellery, beauty products and goods for the home.
