Aldi is a German discount supermarket chain founded in 1946 by the brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in Essen. In 1960 the company split into Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, which still operate separately by country. Aldi built the hard discount model that much of European retail copied: a small range, mostly own brands, plain stores and low prices. It has more than ten thousand stores worldwide.
