Lacoste is a French clothing company founded in 1933 by the tennis player René Lacoste and the knitwear manufacturer André Gillier. It started with the L.12.12 polo shirt, made from a breathable cotton piqué for wear on court, and the crocodile stitched on the chest became the brand mark as well as the nickname of its founder. The range now covers clothing, footwear, leather goods, fragrances and eyewear. Since 2012 the company has been owned by the Swiss group MF Brands.
