Migros is the largest retail company in Switzerland, its largest supermarket chain and one of the country's biggest employers. It was founded in 1925 by Gottlieb Duttweiler and is organised as a federation of regional co operatives with more than two million members, who are in effect its owners. Besides its stores it runs its own food production, petrol stations, electronics and book retailing and a chain of adult education centres. Migros has traditionally sold no alcohol or tobacco.
