South African Airways is the national airline of South Africa, based at Airways Park at O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. It goes back to Union Airways, founded on 24 July 1929 and later taken over by the state, which still owns the carrier. It flies within South Africa, elsewhere in Africa and on a small number of longer routes, and is a member of Star Alliance. The airline went into business rescue in 2020, grounded its fleet and returned in 2021 with a much smaller network.
