It dates from 1931, when it was set up as a subsidiary of the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation. It runs an extensive domestic network as well as flights to destinations on six continents, with regional feeder services flown by independent carriers under the United Express name. United was one of the five founding members of the Star Alliance.
