GU is a Japanese retailer of low priced casual clothing that designs, manufactures and sells its own range. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fast Retailing, the group behind Uniqlo, and its name is a pun on a Japanese word meaning liberty or freedom. The chain has around 478 stores worldwide. Its signature product was a pair of very cheap jeans, which stayed in the range until production ended in January 2014.
