Artis, in full Natura Artis Magistra, is a zoo and botanical garden in the centre of Amsterdam, founded in 1838. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and the fifth oldest in the world still operating, and its grounds hold an aquarium, a planetarium, a butterfly pavilion and listed nineteenth-century buildings. Its Latin name means nature is the teacher of art.
