Krispy Kreme is an American doughnut company and coffeehouse chain. It was founded by Vernon Rudolph, who bought a yeast raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans chef, rented a building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1937 and began selling to local grocery stores. The company went public in 2000, returned to private ownership under the Luxembourg firm JAB Holding in 2016 and listed again on the Nasdaq in July 2021. The name is a deliberate misspelling of crispy cream.
