Piggly Wiggly is an American supermarket chain whose first store opened on 6 September 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee. It was started by Clarence Saunders and is generally credited as the first self service grocery store, where customers walked the aisles and picked goods themselves instead of being served across a counter. Stores carry bakery, dairy, deli, frozen food, meat, produce, seafood and groceries, and many also have a pharmacy. The name is now used by independently owned and franchised stores.
