Pingo Doce, which means sweet drop in Portuguese, is one of the largest supermarket operators in Portugal, with 482 stores as of 2023. Only Continente is bigger among food retailers in the country. Since 1992 it has been run as a joint venture between the Portuguese group Jerónimo Martins, which holds 51 percent, and Ahold Delhaize of the Netherlands, which holds 49 percent. Its parent Jerónimo Martins also operates Biedronka, the largest food retail chain in Poland.
