Trenitalia SpA is the main train operator of Italy. It was set up in 2000 following a European Union directive on the deregulation of rail transport and is a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, which is owned by the Italian state. The company runs both regional services and long distance trains, among them the high speed Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca as well as InterCity and overnight InterCity Notte services. It has also operated in France, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
