About Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic is a British airline with its head office in Crawley, West Sussex. It was founded in 1984 as British Atlantic Airways by Randolph Fields and Alan Hellary, who first planned to fly between London and the Falkland Islands. Fields sold his shares to Richard Branson in return for unlimited free travel, and under its new name the airline made its first flight from London Gatwick to Newark on 22 June 1984. The Virgin Group holds 51 per cent of the company and Delta Air Lines the other 49 per cent.
